Book Two from A Song of Ice and Fire, A Clash of Kings, continues the story of the world of fantasy from George R.R. Martin. The characters continue on their plights as kings arise all over the kingdom. After copying down twelve pages of insightful quotes, I’ve narrowed it down to the best 12 lines. Here they are:
1 – “Who can know the mind of a wolf?” [Ser Rodrik, Bran’s perspective]
It’s a mystery. A dark, deep mystery.
2 – “Power resides where men believe it resides. No more and no less.” [Varys, Tyrion’s perspective]
Belief is a powerful thing, and overrides truth most of the time. We see what we want to see. And people often will believe whatever they are told.
3 – “He who hurries through life hurries to his grave.” [Salladhor Saan, Davos’ perspective]
Live in the moment, don’t rush your life by dreaming about the future. Enjoy and make the most of what you have now.
4 – “When you tear out a man’s tongue, you are not proving him a liar, you’re only telling the world that you fear what he might say.” [Tyrion]
Hiding the truth is never wise. Don’t let others know you are afraid.
5 – “When we speak of the morrow nothing is ever certain.” [Ser Rodrik, Bran’s perspective]
Tomorrow is always a mystery. Even more reason to enjoy today as best as we can.
6 – “Better to die free than live a slave.” [One of Craster’s wives, Jon’s perspective]
Freedom is always better, no matter the cost.
7 – “The wide world is full of people wanting help, Jon. Would that some could find the courage to help themselves.” [The Old Bear/Mormont, Jon’s perspective]
Think about that. Lord Mormont is wise beyond his many years. Guess that’s what happens when you spend decades on a giant mass of ice. You have time to think.
8 – “Learn to use your ears more and your mouth less, or your reign will be shorter than I am.” [Tyrion, Sansa’s perspective]
It’s a bit ironic that Tyrion says this, given that he has the smartest mouth of all. But that would also mean that he knows better than anyone how much trouble the mouth can cause.
9 – “Then fight…but for the living, not the dead.” [Catelyn]
Keep perspectives in check, know what matters most.
10 – “The unseen enemy is always the most fearsome.” [Jon, thinking]
This is why the darkness is so terrifying.
11 – “In formal battle, discipline is more important than courage.” [Tyrion]
Teamwork and strategy, along with loyalty and respect to authority often beat talent.
12 – “Forbid her anything and it became her heart’s desire.” [Catelyn]
We always want what we can’t have. Even if we don’t really care to have it.
